Topic speaks for itself but I'll explain more. If you search up wallpapers, desktop images, or even SSJ most likely you'll get Cell saga era characters except for Trunks who normally have his Broly and Bojack attire. What about this saga is so...iconic for the series? Was it how cool everyone looked? All of the SSJ before Goten and Trunks in many people opinions ruined it?

The Freeza Arc Anime was s***, that's why. Cell Arc is the most overrated part in Dragon Ball easily. |

Someone other than Goku killing a main villain, the first time SSJ was being used by more than Goku, the first time anyone but Goku was the first to get a transformation. Oh, and Cell himself is pretty cool. |

I don't think... most people believe the Frieza sags was poopie. Just the opposite. I should probably fix the OP. Why you see more pictures set in Cell Era than most other sagas. |

In the Freeza Arc, there was so much ridiculous filler like Fake Namek. The Freeza fight between Goku was also so long, there was one episode in the fight that was literally nothing but filler. I stand by my notion. |

But I'm more or less speaking about the majority and artist choice. Not your overall opinion on the other sagas. If that makes sense . |

Well, design wise I think all the characters look the best in the Cell arc. I also want to go on record and say Freeza arc is stupe and the Cell arc is easily better.

A myriad of reasons make Cell arc one of the most beloved in the series. The more centralised role of beloved characters like Vegeta & Trunks, greater prominence of Super Saiyans as others attained the form... It was also at a high point where the series was taking itself the most seriously with the writing while being at its darkest (the Saiyan, Frieza, and Cell arcs share that distinction). Cell was an iconic villain. Moreover, it also marked a turning point where Gohan took over the lead role by being the one to defeat the main antagonist of the arc. I personally like the Frieza and Saiyan arcs more, but the fact that Gohan was able to play the lead role makes it stick out for me. Edited by Thiln, Aug 18 2015, 02:33 PM.

Cell made it popular.

Piccolo: Just how many people have you sacrificed?! Cell: Sacrifice? Hmph, rubbish! On the contrary, it is an honor to become a fraction of my power. | |

It's the last time all of the long time Z-Fighters were relevant. After Trunks had made one of the most brilliant entrances into a series, they were all training in preparation for a new threat. There were three Super Saiyans—which was exciting after the Freeza arc and before it got a bit silly with five in the Boo arc—and Piccolo was some sort of Super Namek - while that still meant something. Tien held off an enemy far more powerful than himself, and Goku was out of action for a long time. Gohan was the last to become a Super Saiyan, but then the first to reach the next stage, and the final battle actually required the help of all of Earth's defenders to come together, with the exception of Goku, who had just sacrificed himself for the Earth. It had an inexplicable vibe to it. I think that was when it was at the peak of its popularity in the West, too. |

Super-Saiyan 2 Gohan Also it's got a creepy atmosphere to it, like the Psychopath Androids in the future and the bad future timeline. I'm talking from Freeza's return all the way before the time-skip, by the way. |

-Cell is considered by many the best villain of DBZ -Someone other than Goku is the main character. -Teen Gohan is considered by many the best version of Gohan and overall a top 10 character. -Introduction of Super Saiyan 2. -Future Trunks also appears. -Vegeta is awesome in this arc. -Android 18's Introduction. -Goku's sacrifice. -It ties in the original Dragon Ball (Gero's grudge) Overall, It introduced new form of SSJ and beloved Characters. The beam struggle at the end was by far the best one ever. |

Well it was probably the last good saga of the series. The art style became a little more detailed. Goku's mysterious confidence in Gohan probably added to the suspension is a positive way. Also like others have said, it was great to see Gohan finally step into his fathers shoes. His transformation was emotionally fueled just like Goku's had been on Namek. It felt like it was out of necessity and not just a simple next step. I guess it just hit all the tropes we love without overdoing it. |

I think the Cell Arc is popular because it has a different tone than the rest of the series. It is the most serious and darkest storyline in the series. I am a horror fan, so I was tickled when I got to see Imperfect Cell stalking people through a carnival and killing them like a slasher villain. Post-Apocalyptic stories always have an audience as well. |

Same here, that's probably the reason why Imperfect Cell is such a beloved character.
